Requirements for Entry to Cuba

A Nigeria passport with at least 6 months of remaining validity is mandatory for travel. A Cuba tourist visa is required for citizens of Nigeria, as well as a copy of confirmed reservation for accommodations while in Cuba.

Havana Jose Marti International Airport (HAV)

Located 25 kilometres away, it takes 30 minutes to get into central Havana by taxi.  Only ride in official government approved taxis as it is against the laws of Cuba to ride in non-licensed vehicles. There is rental car service available on-site at the airport also but you can hire a car with Travelstart.

Major Attractions

The Capitolio (National Capitol Building) has a dome that practically overshadows the Havana skyline. There are also plenty of interesting sights inside, such as the largest interior bronze statue of La Republica, a 25 carat diamond located in the exact centre of Havana's city centre and the Cuban Natural History Museum.

Catedral de San Cristóbal de La Havana is a true triumph of 18th century architecture.  Designed in a mixture between Baroque and Ecclesiastic styles, its features include spires, columns and other set pieces. The inside of the cathedral contains recreations of paintings by Rubens and Murillo. The remains of Columbus were kept here from 1761 to 1898 as well as a 1623 sculpture of the Patron Saint of Havana, Saint Christopher.

Take a relaxing walk along the Malecón. Sometimes called as the “heart and soul” of Havana, this eight kilometre esplanade, roadway and seawall stretches across the coast and the place that the local fish.

Meet with some local artisans at Taller Experimental de Grafica, near to Cathedral Square. This former public bathhouse was founded in 1962 and hosts dozens of artists.  Catch some more Cuban art at the Museo Nacional de Bellas Artes de La Habana.

Complete a visit with sampling Havana's most popular export product. The Partagas cigar factory is located just behind the Capitol Building.

Things to Do

Catch a premier cabaret show at the Tropicana, see the ballet at the Havana Music Conservatory, take a tour in a classic 1957 Chevy, salsa the night away or see a baseball (beisbol) game.  Cuba is renowned for their appreciation of sports, arts and culture.

Outside of hotels, local cuisine is served in restaurants and cafes dotted throughout Havana. Fresh fish, chicken and vegetables can be included in specialties such as arroz con pollo (chicken with rice) tostones rellenos (stuffed banana), pastelón de yuca y pollo (baked yuca pie with chicken) and pescado a la parilla (grilled fish).

Transportation

Walking around Havana is the easiest method of seeing all the sites.

Metered tourist taxis are readily available in front of points of interests and hotels. Those with air-conditioning will be costly when compared to those without

Bici-taxis are a fun way to see the points of interest in the city, or rent a bicycle and explore on your own.

Havana has recently acquired a new fleet of modern city buses. They are inexpensive but tend to be crowded.

Best Time to Visit

Habana has a warm, tropical climate with warm, humid weather all year long.  The constant trade winds make it feel comfortable even in the hottest months of summer. However, rainfall is greater during that period.
