Founded by the German colonial masters as a station for the ivory trade route, and an agricultural research post in 1888 - Yaoundé was later occupied by Belgium during World War l; and the French as the League of Nations trustee. The French made Yaoundé their capital city for governing French Cameroon.
Lush green and hilly landscapes help Yaoundé stand out from other West African capitals. The air is also cooler in the city as it is 750 meters above sea level. This combination makes the city a pleasant place to visit, and although it is short on traditional attractions, it makes up for it in friendliness and charm.
The Musèe d’Art Camerounias provides visitors with a great introduction to the country’s art, history and culture. The museum is a part of the capital’s Benedictine monastery, and the chapel contains a lovely exhibit of traditional crafts and textiles. Yaoundé is also home to an abundance of wildlife. Tourists can see a sizeable amount in the Mefou National Park.
