Really nice post – great job! Its unfortunate that most of the existing monuments were constructed by former governments – recent administration has done little or nothing to improve them. No worries though: I strongly believe things will get better with time, and a government with the political will.

Why not compare these pictures/sites with what they look like at the moment. You’d quite agree with me that we’ve suffered infrastructural decay. This will make people appreciate the more that successive governments in Nigeria has failed us. Many more structures are in a dilapidated state.

Please post the current state of these sights, sites and scenes alongside the old ones to really show the changes. I suspect you can’t because in most cases that will show a retrogression, not progress…but that’s exactly what evokes nostalgia.

It is indeed sad and a great loss that the seemingly peace-loving people of Nigeria are now those that have to deal with the likes of Boko Haram and other insurgency aimed at tearing the country apart. I remember poignantly growing up in Nigeria and I used never to beleive that there is any other country as wonderful as ours, until the greedy politicians began to take over and corruption became a thing that many are proud to exhibit at work and their way of life. Not able to adapt to this selfish mindset, I escaped my country in the early eighties and I have been permanently living abroad since then although I make periodic visits to Nigeria.

It’s quite clear that majority of development in this country commenced in the South West and North, no wonder the alarm raised by the people of South east and South South which was brutally suppressed. My late brother-in-law, an Irishman lived with bis parents at 3 Glover Road Ikoyi in the 50s and 60s and spoke lovingly about the paradise it was. Riding bicycles down quiet lanes to swim in the creeks. and driving through open country to get to Ikeja. I believe things go in cycles and the wheel turns. The environmental degradation and littering which is such a blight on Nigeria today and us the result of explosive population growth and the lack of public amenities and services coupled with a general lack of awareness of personal accountability for caring for the encironment and the need for maintanance can be reversed. The Thames river in the UK was a cess pit 30 years ago. Today it is cleaner a d healthier than it has been in decades. Already you can see improvements in Lagos as a reault of the efforts of the Fashola administration. For Lagos to become a world class city serious and sustained commitment to environme tal care, sewerage disopsal and treatment and infrastructural development is critical. If that happens and each and everyone takes a personal responsibility paradise lost can become paradise found.

They are pests, and leaving Nigeria will mean terminating ALL types and forms of employments given to Igbos in all non-Igbo states, and in all Federal Institutions as well. They will not be able to work, or spend more than 3 months in cities like Lagos, as their Nigerian passports will be dispossessed and replaced with whatever their new fucking country is called. Seeing those pictures leaves me with mixed feelings. Mixed in the sense that we could have preserved our past and developed a new Lagos in the Lekki Corridor. Am impressed with some wonderful comments but Osaretin must go and learn that Love of our neighbours is our highest good. No one chose his/her parentage. And in criticising other people we must be magnanimous. What does a fellow like Osaretin know about our history? It is unfortunate.

In photo # 39, the aircraft is a VC10, not a Fokker. Note the characteristic four engines in the rear. I think Nigeria Airways, had at least one of these aircraft in its fleet.

When I saw all these pictures the question that came to mind was:where are those people involved in these pictures? Perhaps most of them must have gone beyond six feet. That made me to conclude that one day will shall also become history. When our children also begin to go down memory lane about us. my prayer is that we leave a good story about us behind. A very beautiful reminisce of the past. We have indeed came a long way. Think Nigeria always first as other citizens does of their countries.
