I have been to all the places you mentioned and agree with your assessment of it all except for Abeokuta where i live presently. You may need to reconduct your research on the cost of living and you will realise that it is on the high side without any justification for it. Food and food items are very costly there.
Truly Ilorin is cheap to live in, as in very cheap in terms of renting an apartment, good schools and good number of high institutions. Though job opportunities are very few but a thriving place for businesses in case you are an entrepreneur.
The main cause of this is the proximity of Abeokuta to Lagos {an expensive city }

Living in Ajaokuta is relatively cheap, but Life in Lokoja is a little expensive as food is not cheap, but housing and transportation is not all that expensive, but at least much more cheaper than life in Lagos.

You have aptly described Abeokuta. One can live like a King within little income. It would amaze you how many people who work in Lagos are resident in Abeokuta. Serene yet alive, happy people who know how to relax. One doesn’t have to move far to get anything.

Yes,Abeokuta is cheap to live in,peaceful and when it comes to transportation, its so easy, just stand in front of your house and a cab will stop in front of you to know where you going and if your house is not close to the road, just a few steps will do. But Abeokuta is not an industrial place,it is a place for small and medium scale enterprises.

Indeed, Ikom and Ibadan are affordable to live in, they are also peaceful and lively. Ikom is also hospitable with tourist sites, good terrain and good road network. They also have lot of cocoa production which you can venture into as a lucrative business.

I lived in Ife for basically all my life before I moved to the US and I love love the town!!! Its a good place for the family, studying etc Electricity is also very good in most places.
I dont believe with you people, becouse kano is the cheapest city in nigeria because of the following reason:-
1. House rent 1000 naira per month. 2. Plate of food with meat N100. 3. Pure water N5 4. Transportation within the city N50 / N100.

I live in Aba.Aba is truly affordable and relatively peaceful.Just come with a pair of rainboot to help you through the muddy roads;prepare your mind to drink borehole water because the water scheme is simply non-existent.Pls don’t forget to come with ‘I better pass my neighbour’,otherwise…..
Owerri is expensive to live in. a good two bedroom flat goes between N240K to N360K. transportation is high, etc

Calabar, ph and yenagoa are definitely expensive to live in compared to the cities in the list. Maybe warri and asaba may be cheaper though

Sambisa forest too… :-D… you have weapons that you can use to protect yourself. The major sport in the area is archery and grenade throwing. There are tourist guides that can help you navigate it, cheerfully… 😀

I agree with your ratings. Ilorin is unbelievably cheap , mordernised and peaceful , the last timeI was there 2yrs ago ,you can still board a taxi at N50, N100 if you can negotiate. Ikom is fantastic. You can your pounded yam in aboudance. Its close to the Ranch and Mfum border .life is lived fully without much stress.

I’ve lived in Ibadan and Aba. The assessment of Ib is spot on…as for Aba, hmmm…that city is just TOO dirty!!! Chai! Plus the power situation is comatose (worse than the general national average I must say)…we basically lived on the gen set all through my stay.

I’ve lived in Kano, Zaria, Ife, Aba; and paid saveral visits to most of the other cities mentioned. @ Ikhide, Aba was dirty then, things have changed in that regard now. @ Kusimo, Aba is very cheap to live in, both before and now. Perhaps you’ve not heard the slangs that says “if you bend down, you go see Aba” May be you never bend my dear. If taking N50 or N100 fare is cheap, according to Olu, then may I remind you that there are distances you still pay N20 in Aba. Try bend.

Having lived both in Ibadan and Abeokuta respectively.. I can say both are relatively cheap to say. But if you want a Lagos kind of lifestyle in terms of outings, social gatehering and fun. Ibadan is your best bet as its almost like living in Lagos without the stress and high standard of living.

You can live like a king in Abeokuta, i hav been to Abeokuta, ibadan, ife and i’m currently @ ilorin, evrytin in Abeokuta is so cheap, the highest transport fare in Abeokuta is #50 no matter ur destination and u dnt hav to run after bus unlike ibadan. Apart frm problem of cultism, ilorin is da home of hospitality, ile ife is cool also but who knws when da modakeke issue will rise again
If you want a cheap and relatively developed area in the NigerDelta, then consider Omoku and Ahoada in Rivers State.

Awesome night life, great and affordable cost of living and foods aplenty. I know Ilorin is cool too though and I hope I’l get to explore Abeokuta soon enough. Someday, I’l check out most of those adorable Eastern cities. I’m sorry, but the North do not appeal to me.

Ibadan might be taken to be one of the cheapest cities as reported here in terms of transportation but not in food or accommodation for those who has created a better standard of living for themselves . Though peacefull if you don’t go beyond your bound. Preferring, lying, cheating and stealing is like a culture in the city, as well as laziness among the men and women folks that is why cheap adultery is rampant. Business opportunities is at zero level. Not even from the government secretariat compared with neighboring states. Ile-ife is a no go area o, except you want to live in a ramshackle house and or eat foods that will make you purge out your intestine. Cost of transportation is cheap but the exploitation is too much, everybody in ife wants to use the best of cars… In this life on mine I’ve seen the most expensive cars in ife, they are everywhere like okadas ranging from R royse_porche(both car and jeep)_Bently_ just name dem. House rent is killing, a self contain which is more like a room with other divisions cropped out of it is nothing less dan 120k. You want to rent a two bedroom flat, u don buy land else where. Goto the market with 3k, you can never cook a reasonable soup. And when u arrive Na single room of @ least 40k you go first rent and share two toilet and bathrooms with about 20 rooms. God help you, each room has d minimum of about 2 people makes 40 of you sharing. but if you hustle aright b4 d next rent, you don dey self contain. Na fact o. Makurdi is indeed one of the cheapest places to leave in Nigeria but the famous city of Gboko is far more cheaper and safer than all.

For me akure is cheap and very much indeed housing, food stuff and boy compared to other cities the light is above average plus its peaceful and the people are so so friendly I love Akure …and before you think am repping it because am from the south west am not am from the south east !!

I can’t believe Aba and Onitsha figure in this list. There is no way they’d rank as one of the cheapest towns to live in. What happened to Enugu, Akure, Ado Ekiti, Jos? was the research limited to the southern part of the country? If it is then state it. I can go on and on about Northern towns where is utterly cheap to reside.

Nice Research, I think this research is based on major cities and not towns, I can see people mentioning towns. City and Town are two different things. Ibadan is a very cool place to relocate aside Lagos or Abuja. It’s close to Lagos, Abeokuta, Oshogbo. I know several people working in Lagos and do come from Ibadan daily. In Ibadan it depends on which part of Ibadan you want to stay and what kind of apartment. Transport is very cheap, feeding is cheap too if you don’t eat out (If you make your food yourself). Ibadan people are accomodating, it’s in there eulogy “Ibadan ti o gba onile to gba lejo”. Visitors are accepted in Ibadan in literal meaning. Life style is excellent and a good place to do business.
Ibadan is really cheap in terms of Food, transportation and House rents, but the business growth is very slow, as the city is filled with professionals like teachers, doctors e.t.c and so many retirees , its not a good place for a young vibrant person to start a life
Ikot Ekpene is the cheapest place to live…come to think of it,ikot ekpene is cheap in terms of accomodation,transportation,food supply etc. and even the business sector is encouraging
Nice post.. but the first picture you posted is actually Uyo not ikot ekpene. Actually the cheapest and best place to live in Akwaibom is Ikot Abasi. Houses are cheap and there is light because of the power station. Light is a big deal. I have stayed in Uyo, no light.

Makurdi cheap! Then you have not lived in a cheap town. Everything is expensive here they even want to exploit you when it comes to what they farm like mangoes etc. For people who live in places like Lagos they will say Makurdi is cheap but if you have lived in Jos, Akure,Ibadan,Abeokuta you wont say that. Another thing to consider is social life if drinking and eatting meat doesnt bore you then you will love Makurdi but if you love hanging out in gardens shoping in fine super markets etc then forget Makurdi. I moved into this town four years ago and i will give anything to move out

Abeokuta is one of the best place to live. you can only get cheap accommodation and cheap things at non student location. I lived in Abeokuta for 2yrs studying at Mapoly. Try Abeokuta you will enjoy it

Zaria is also a very cheap and affordable place to leave, its just quite unfortunate with the recent killing in the north. Zaria to me is one of the cheapest city to leave in thiz country, although av not being to some places mentioned here despite the face that i enjoy travelling. Have being to Aba, Onisha and Abeokuta, but i still rate Zaria ahead of thiz cities i just mentioned. In terms of cost of leaving Zaria is cool.

Ilorin! come to Ilorin… almost everything is affordable, peaceful and the people here in Ilorin are business minded. I moved from makurdi to Ilorin this year I am doing fine now. living better!
Makurdi is not it at all. I live in Makurdi as I write this piece. Foods are cheap though, but economy wise, Makurdi is F9. The town is not attractive. Streets are not tarred; heavy sand occupies everywhere. Industrially backward. HIV and Cultism are in the increase. The people of Makurdi, though predominantly farmers, are very hard working when it comes to that. Transportations are okay, predominantly buses and bikes, though affordable. The longest distance u can shuttle is #100( bus). Live in Makurdi is not worth it. Rentage is moderate; atleast affordable! Is far from a City and beautiful city for that matter!!!

Compared to Lagos and Abuja the listed cities are cheap but not as cheap as listed, in abeokuta you can’t buy food for 100 naira and be satisfied (except you no want chop meat).bread for 30 naira is joke. And 1000 naira house is not convenient at all(no water system).ibadan is not cheap as much as you think a plot of land can go as high as 40million naira (bodija)
Abeokuta comprises of Egba, Owu and Yewa who are sorrounded by large size of land which can be used for the cultivation, rearing and feeds production.
Therefore, it should awake and be more productive than Ikpot Ekpene because it has all these materials to compete and perform more.
