10 Reasons Why Lagos Is Better Than Abuja

Over the years, many Nigerians have debated whether Lagos is better than Abuja with remarks been tossed like grenades across both sides. Sometimes, we are caught in a web of fierce argument about the two cities. However, Abuja and Lagos are famous and great cities in the country.

Abuja, the capital of Nigeria has become an upmarket city, popularly known as the ‘London of Africa’; but Lagos is the one of the largest city in Africa that best combines the diversities, character, foibles and strengths of Nigeria. We have highlighted 10 reasons why Lagos is better than Abuja:

1. The cost of living

Lagos

Have you ever wondered why almost everyone wants to be in Lagos instead of Abuja even though it is better developed and prettier? The reason is simple! Lagos is a city that is very affordable to live no matter your social status. It has become the home of everyone which means that you can comfortably live in Lagos with little compared to the luxury lifestyle in Abuja.

2. A city of dream where paupers become millionaires

Let us face it, when it comes to becoming a self-made millionaire in Nigeria, there is no better place to be than Lagos. This is where anyone can start from the scratch and become a millionaire overnight. Everyone in Lagos is a hustler; they are always busy working or doing something that will bring them money. Lagosians are taught to be ‘street-wise’ unlike Abuja, where almost everyone behaves like ‘Ajebutter’ (rich) kids. There are many celebrities and millionaires who came from slums in Lagos today.

3. Believe it or not, you can find an affordable apartment in Lagos

Yes, we know that the holy grail of Lagos expensive urban real estate is out there but this does not mean that everyone is living in luxury apartments that only wealthy people can afford. There are thousands of very affordable apartments if you are patient enough to find them. The rent in Lagos is not always as expensive as what Abuja would offer you.

4. Contagious lifestyle

If you’ve ever lived in Lagos and Abuja, you would be quick to point out the boring social life that hovers around Abuja. The social life setting that you embrace in Lagos may never leave you. There are lots of necessary social behaviours in Lagos, like the small talks, fashion, communication and socialization that run deep in every fibre of Lagos. Lagos is where life begins socially and spread to other parts of Nigeria.

5. Tourism merges with adventure in Lagos

Lagos is always bursting with activities with its posh hotels, restaurants and places to explore. This city has become the face of tourism compared to Abuja. You can immerse yourself in deep cultures, surroundings and histories- from spiritual shrines, beaches, parks and many more. The tourism journey in Lagos always gives a worthy run for your money because the fun never ends. Little wonder, thousands of tourists visit Lagos to have a lifetime experience.

6. Cheap transportation

Red-BRT

The transportation system in Lagos is far lower than that of Abuja. There are lots of transport alternatives like the BRT buses, Yellow buses, taxis cabs and tricycles for you in Lagos unlike Abuja where you can only get ‘London taxi’ and green-cabs, which are quite expensive and few. The high cost of ‘special drops’ can be discouraging and to compound your challenge in Abuja, trekking may be a Hercules task.

7. Home of entertainment – Nollywood

It is only in Lagos that you see the highest number of celebrities and entertainers living in Nigeria. The city is vibrant with lots of social functions happening almost every day. Indeed, there is no dull moment in Lagos because it is a city where talents are born and grown. Lagos has earned its name not only as the music and movies birthplace, but where entertainment is done better than anywhere in Nigeria.

8. Social vibes – parties and nightlife

Have you ever spent your weekend in Lagos? The vibe is felt in the air and the parties colourful, engaging, wild and sometimes crazy. There is no rule on how parties are going to be held, which means that you’ve got an array of choices for clubs, hookup spots, bars and hotels all waiting for you to join in the fun. People come to Lagos to celebrate their weekends because that is where the social activities make the difference.

9. Employment opportunities

It is easier to get a job in Lagos unlike Abuja, where it is nearly impossible for one to get a job. With many international companies, small businesses and local investments in Lagos, there is always an employment opportunity. The metropolis has become a land of opportunity for thousands of Nigerians who come with nothing and end up very comfortable later.

10. Lagos has a sense of solidarity and love

Love is always in the air in Lagos unlike Abuja where everyone is like an island. Talk about solidarity and support for a clause, it all begins in Lagos. Sympathy is quickly shared and support is gotten fast because everyone minds everyone’s business. A visit to Abuja would convince you that you are definitely on your own with its peculiar way of life even among neighbours. Nigerians living in Abuja live the fake lifestyle due to the high standard of living.

  1. Lagos is 100% better than Abuja. I was in Lagos before I came to Abuja so the Difference is Clear

  2. LAG 4 SURE ,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,100T

  3. Are you talking about Lagos for the rich and mighty or the very ordinary man?

How about having a life, a meaningful life devoid of smelly gutters and environment, endless traffic and chaos. For the ordinary man, you can never compare Lagos to Abuja.

  4. I was also in Lagos before I came over to Abuja, would never dream of going back

  5. How on earth can you compare the transportation in Lagos and Abuja, Abj is way cheaper with less traffic.

  6. I am in Love with Lagos… Always been always will but I have to point out that Abuja Transportation is way cheaper than Lagos. That is a known fact.

    • Yes it is. That’s the only wrong point in this article. Lagos is more sociallay and economically vibrant

Abuja is Sha calmer. We don’t like gra gra in Abj. We are chilled peeps Lol.

    • Traffic bottle neck undid Lagos..!

  7. lagos all the way.. abuja ko abuja ni

  8. Please leave your comment…i hav not been to abuja… but lagos is d best, can u compare the cost of living in abuja with lagos no no no

  9. Lagos and Abj have their respective peculiar features that distinguish them from other cities in Nigeria. While Lagos is more cosmopolitan in terms of population, Abj has a neater environ devoid of a stinking and filthy dranage. Again, Abj has a lighter and so, freer traffic and I will attribute this to a better road network in Abj than in Lagos, and not neccesarily less overcrowding.

  10. Abuja can’t be compared to Lagos by all standards. Transportation as mentioned is cheaper in Abuja because the less or no huge traffic situation in Abuja makes it much easier for operators to charge lesser fares from point A to B. The serenity offered in Abuja is umparralel but that alone does not guarrantee food. Lagos is better in all.

  11. Please leave your comment…Abuja is the best city in Africa. I have stayed in Victoria island in Lagos and Later move to wuse ll Abuja.. I felt relief in Abuja to compare with that over crowded city Lagos. Abuja is another LONDON.

  12. answering chinedu, abuja is like a roasted meat and Lagos like pepper soup meat. if not well taken care of any can smell but the effect of drinking soup and eating meat add fun to the time of pleasure. ABEG NA LAGOS

  13. Lagos is much better than Abuja. People don’t pretend 2 be what they are not.

  14. I am presently in lagos but I would never compare lagos to abuja. Abuja has the level-headedness of raising a family. All this lagos kids are weigh too corrupt. Lagos smells even amongst the residence of the rich. And the traffic????. OMG don’t even go there. The road is just bad. You own a car you will surfer, you don’t own a car you will still surfer. Lagos is a breading ground for thugs and criminals, in lagos Agbero is a carreer. If I don’t settle in ABJ, I wouldn’t wanna be in naija sef.

  15. Kaduna is a place to be. fashion Politics nd Football lives here.
    KD 4 sure.

  16. Please leave your comment…lagos transpotation is high compare to abuja, but life begin @ lagos.i was stay in abuja presently am in lagos.gbosaaaaa for lagos

  17. Cost of living in Abuja is not as high as LAGOS, house rent is not as high as LAGOS, transportation in Abuja is far cheaper than LAGOS…..cabs go for as low as N200 a drop, where will you find that in LAGOS? All Said I will prefer to be in Abuja than this LAGOS!

  18. Lagos has proven to be the best in all states I have been to Abuja inclusive,Lagos is 100% better in all aspect

  19. Lagos is got it all for the rich Lagos is there for the average Lagos is there and even for the poor Lagos is there Lagos covers all aspect I can say again that Lagos is the best state Nigeria’s got

  20. Lagos will never spoil…Eko onibaje….I love Lagos…far more better than Abj

  21. Lagos is far better dan abuja, Lagos (city of hustlers, porsche men nd women, Home of sense) if u ar in lagos nd u ar nt sharp bet me u’ll be dull for life

  22. AM a born Eko breed but i wouldnt trade Abj’s simple classy life style for gragra and noise traffic etc…. my God i go anywhere with ease.. must we party everynight abeg use the time to make money, i was in lagos few months back and i couldnt wait to be back… damn una dey try

  23. Lagos is far far better than abuja, i lived in abuja for 2yrs looking for job but noway, but 2month after i came to lagos i got a good job,ma ex mum gave her some money to come to lagos for job after her youth service after some few months she got a job @one of the biggest insurance company here in lagos:p…..

  24. hahahahah,
I would give my reasons that Abuja is better than Lagos but it would take up way too much time. I can look in to invalidating all of the reasons mentioned above (but its all personal opinion and this is just mine so not worth it). I have never traveled to such a worthless and waste of time city as Lagos. I think I would rather travel to Hell than Lagos 🙂 Good luck with Lagos though.

  25. Fashi d only truth
    abt d above article is
    dat, apartment in Abj..
    r pretty expensive.
    Safe dat, Abj is 10/10!

  26. Like seriously , Lagos is far better dan Abj. job opportunities, affordable accommodation, buying food at a relatively cheap price are nessecities dat distinguish Lag frm Abj couple with affordable social life. But in terms of transportation i give it to Abj.

  27. I was born in Lagos but grow i n abj.my dear abj is far better. transport is cheaper ad the life here is calm.even the poorest person in abuja can afforded a house in a clean environment compare to Lagos were u have to live in a gutter.

  28. lagos is better compare to abuja

  29. mayb we shuld ask foreign investors, youths seeking for jobs, market women, celebrities, etc….common! lagos is wot makes nigeria abeg.if u dnt like it,trek to abj make president shake ur hand.

  30. Please leave your comment… Wow! The truth has just been revealed, lagos is the place to live no doubt, with my experience living in abuja, I discovered almost all d reasons outlined, the bad of all is in terms of employment, you can only see graduates walking around no one to help, even the serving corpers there don’t get joy automatically, but in lagos employment is easy compared to that of abuja.

  31. Please leave your comment…Lagos is far far better than Abuja, I was posted to Abuja to serve but I had to redeploy back to Lagos because I don’t want live a fake life, here in Lagos u can be urself, u can be comfortable with just little amount of money, but it not like that in Abuja, u have earn enough to be comfortable. They are too calm for my liking, unlike the rocking place in Lagos. We have beach, but Abuja doesn’t have beach so to me Abuja is a boring place to live in. Lagos got swag, companies for quick employment opportunities among others. Lagos is just the best

  32. In terms of security Lagos is far better please…there may be traffic congestion alright but that is why miscreants like Boko Haram cannnot just operate anyhow because they cant escape….we in Lagos mind each others busoness so its easy to suspect loiterring and strange people like bombers…Abuja is full of fake people who claim to be what they are not making life so expensive and thats why people especially girls do all sorts to keep up…LAGOS for real

  33. Lagos is far much better dan abj, evry one dream is to be in lagos,i luv lagos dan any place in nigeria

  34. Abj is a nice place to live wen one is rich bcuz of the cost of living there..Bt lagos is a land of hustlerz.. Land of opportunity.. U want to make money? Go to lag.. U want to flex ur money? Live in Abj..

  35. This article is biased. You don’t expect Abuja as the Federal Capital to have all the ‘craze’ of Lagos. This is government Abj besides, if you are simple enough, you will live a less expensive but fruitful life in Abj. It is even the Lagos emigrants especially that are corrupting Abj residents. I dont see my self raising a family in Lag going by what I have observed from coursemates who are from Lag. Abj anytime, anyday.

  36. Lagos is most preferred to me because of its numerous opportunities

  37. U guy dat said abj is 100p beTter dan lagos no problem but am very sure wetin dey pursue una wey dey kill people for that abj go soon carry ujna come lag back reserved my comment till den

  38. I was born and brought up in Lagos b4 I was transferred to Abuja……..

Tasteless food I bought in an hotel I Lodge at gwanrinpa area at rate of 1500 a plate, will only cost me 250 in Lagos……….

The two bedroom apartment the company rent for us is 450,000 a year…….

While such apartment will cost 350,000 for 2years…….

Why pple in Abuja leaving a fake life? Many of them stay in gwagwalada, suleja, and Co. In a ghetto but they all claim that they are leaving in Abuja……. All good things come from Lagos b4 other state

  39. I prefer Abuja to Lagos. Abuja is calmer while that of Lagos is noisy.

  40. Lagos is real.. Abuja is fake.. 100 gboza 4 lagos. Eko’ oni baje’

  41. Sooner later Kaduna will b the topic of discussion, kd will b beta dan abuja and lagos in no distant tym

  42. Lagos is gud but l preferred abuja where l stay because the last time l visited lagos l mange to spend 2days bz of d hold up nd dirty environment.

  43. Trafic bottleneck in Lagos undoing the city…!

  44. Lagos is far more better than Abuja,u can suceed in lagos if u re jjc than abj and moreover there is no class u will not c in lagos.cost of living in lagos is far better than abj and their is no cities in d world that doesnt has his own ghetto. Lagos all d way.

  45. Although its very true dah Lagos z more fun filled than Abuja, d life in Abuja z quite simple and less tough. Rather peaceful.
I always say this,” Lagos z a city for people who really want to hustle for money,, n Abuja z a city for people who really have made money and want to enjoy it peacefully.” (Winks…)
Yeah, things are quite expensive here. But hey,, transport z very cheap, and u don’t only find expensive taxis in Abj, dere are also buses, cheap taxis and motorcycles.
    Abuja is clean!!

  46. All dis are just for writing sake, I’m very comfortable in Abuja, there are villages around where u can put ur head. Transportation is nothing to write home about in Lagos unlike Abuja.

  47. lagos is making sense than abuja…abuja kind of dull….and for the traffic is because of d level of high population in lagos nd high ecoomy growth in lagos makes every where crowdy and having traffic all the time….with this it makes you know what life is and also make learn how to survive alone with out any support from anybdy but in abuja OYO (on your own) nobody cares….lagos for sure jawe

  48. I have not be to abuja but I have be to Lagos and I must say I don’t like the place at all….The people there every body is angry because the way they answer person self na wa….any girl u see that is from lagos, u will know once that this girl is from lagos because they can sleep with any man just to have money to buy what they see other girls put on…..please the way the people I have meet in my life is saying about abuja…i know that abuja will be more better then that so call Lagos plesssss.

  49. i chose lagos. lagos 4 real.

  50. I have lived in abuja for sometimes now but lagos is still the best place to live as a hustler
